Orange-peel snuffbox

You'll need Tick as you go

• Oranges (it can take a dozen to get two good boxes)
• A hot washing soda solution, for softening the peel (the post doesn't give its strength)
• Plain snuff, to fill the finished box

Method

1. Step 1 of 5Take out the fruit and the pith, leaving the inside of the skin clean and white.
2. Step 2 of 5Soak the skins in the hot washing soda solution until they're soft enough to work.
3. Step 3 of 5Turn each skin inside out and mould it into a round box with a lid. Expect most of the oranges to split at this stage.
4. Step 4 of 5Leave the boxes to cure. They take about four days and end up light and hard, like wood.
5. Step 5 of 5Fill a finished box with plain snuff and keep the lid on.

Rest time

The box cures in about four days. The original post says it keeps scenting snuff for several years.

A clear orange scent on plain snuff.

Notes

The lid needs to fit tightly or the snuff leaks. Filing out the wedge-shaped insert makes the lid easier to open. Wear gloves for the hot washing soda solution.
