This snuff has a moderate to low level of nicotine, which allows all-day use without burn or drip issues. Having both a tapper and a regular tin of this snuff, I have found it to be just a tad moist, but nothing like TAXI Green; this is not dusty like some fine English snuffs. The tobacco is dark brown to black, with occasional specks of white and tan. The grind is fine, generally speaking, though both tins of mine had some rather large clumps that had to be sieved to break them down, with the majority of the snuff fine in nature. The finer grind with the moisture present makes this snuff easy to pinch, and there is no menthol present to irritate the nose, nor is this snuff a drip producer: a great "plain" snuff to get behind.
Brunswick has been a snuff I put off reviewing for some time. My first experience came from a poorly sealed tapper that had dried out and lost much of its charm. It was flat, dusty, and frankly unenjoyable. After a recommendation, I ordered a larger non-tapper tin of BBR, and what a difference that made.
BBR comes in with a rich tobacco-forward presence. Earthy, dark, and grounded. There are undertones of fermented leaf, not barnyard, not sharp, just a gentle reminder that this is mature tobacco. It's not quite as deep or smoky as Thor's Hammer, but it carries a light cured character that feels natural and honest. As the tin breathes, the aroma slowly opens. You can actually smell the leaf expanding and relaxing, the darker notes softening into something rounded and complex.
This is plain tobacco done well. Because of the fine, slightly weighty grind, I found the boxcar method a bit clumsy. BBR prefers a small, confident pinch that delivers beautifully and settles well in the nose without excessive drip. Brunswick Black Rappee shines as a stand-alone plain snuff. It scratches that itch for something simple, dark, and tobacco-centric. BBR would, however, also make an outstanding base for savoury-forward blending: think light smoke, leather, subtle spice, or even a restrained herbal note. It has enough backbone to support additions without losing its identity. If your first tin disappoints, don't give up on it. Sometimes the difference between dusty regret and earthy richness is simply a well-sealed container. This is one of those snuffs that rewards proper storage.
