SM Blue, also known as Sharrows Medicated Blue, opens with a firm menthol front which is bright, sharp, and direct. Eucalyptus follows closely behind, and camphor rounds out the trio with just enough herbal depth to give it structure without overwhelming the nose. The result is a medicated blend that delivers the classic cooling experience in a cleaner, more accessible way. This is a snuff that knows what it's about.
The grind is medium-fine, consistent with most English-style snuffs, as I find they tend to fall between fine and medium-fine, with a uniform light brown colour throughout. The moisture is moderate, just enough to keep things moving, though there is some minor clumping in the tin. This snuff contains a light to moderate amount of vitamin N and is easy to use throughout the day, though if you're seeking a strong boost you may need to take another pinch. In use, SM Blue comes on strong but is not complicated, which makes it a reliable pinch when you need a mental reset, or something to carry you through a long task under the sun. Ease of use sits at intermediate, as the rush of menthol may be off-putting to some.
What stood out to me most was the ratio and presentation of the trinity. Camphor is often the dividing line in medicated snuffs as it can turn a refreshing blend into an overly herbal experience. Here, it's blended with this in mind. You still get the structure and herbal cooling camphor brings, but it never takes over. Eucalyptus adds a refreshing note that lingers just long enough, and the menthol grabs your attention without dragging it out. As with some mentholated blends, the effect is somewhat fleeting, which is the only drawback I can note about this snuff. SM Blue doesn't dominate your senses; it shows up, does the job, and leaves you clear-headed for the next task.
If you've been wary of camphor-heavy snuffs, this is a fine place to start. Bold enough to wake you up, but balanced enough to keep you coming back for more. This snuff should find a home in your rotation without much difficulty.
