Measuring spoons
For recipes written in teaspoons and tablespoons, and for quick additions such as salt or ground spices.

What to look for
A cheap set that goes down to 1/8 teaspoon covers the older recipes. Level each spoonful off with a knife.
Spoons are fine for spices, salt and liquids. Alkalis like sodium carbonate go in small, exact amounts, so switch to scales for those when you can.
