Queen's Snuff (1850 recipe)

CustomisingscentingBeginner

From volunge on the Snuffhouse forum, 2022

A lavender, lemon and bergamot scent from Henry Beasley's The Druggist's General Receipt Book (1850), converted to modern amounts.

Use bergapten-free bergamot oil, sold as FCF. Ordinary bergamot oil contains bergapten, which can make skin burn in sunlight.

Notes

By weight, the original is 2 parts lavender, 4 parts lemon and 8 parts bergamot oil, with one part of that blend to 64 parts snuff. Any plain snuff works. For a classic Scotch texture, use WoS Plain or a homemade plain: 72.5% tobacco flour (Virginia, Burley or both, sifted at 100 to 150 microns) with 5% sodium or potassium carbonate and 2.5% sodium bicarbonate dissolved in 20% water, rested for a week in a closed container and sifted again at 200 to 300 microns. Essential oils are strong, so count the drops.
