Digital scales
For weighing tobacco, alkalis and salt accurately, which matters most when you're working in small batches.

What to look for
Look for digital scales that read to 0.1 g. If you plan to make tiny test batches of 10 g or less, scales that read to 0.01 g are better, because a recipe might call for 0.2 g of something and a 0.1 g scale can't tell 0.15 from 0.24.
Put your bowl or a small lid on the scales, zero them, then add each ingredient. Weighing beats measuring by volume, since ground tobacco packs down by different amounts every time.
If you don't own scales yet, some older recipes use spoons and cups instead (see measuring spoons), but expect less consistent results.
